NATIONAL TELEVISION ACADEMY PRESENTS 24th ANNUAL NEWS AND DOCUMENTARY EMMY AWARDS

Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to 60 Minutes Creator and Executive Producer Don Hewitt and Past and Present Correspondents and Producers


New York, September 3, 2003 – The 24th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards were presented by the National Television Academy Wednesday, September 3, 2003. An impressive line-up of prominent newsmakers and industry executives including Bill Moyers, Jane Pauley and George Stephanopoulos presented the awards to a distinguished group of broadcast journalists at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast throughout the 2002 calendar year. During the ceremony, David Westin, president of ABC News, presented the Lifetime Achievement award to Don Hewitt, executive producer of the pioneering news magazine 60 Minutes, along with executive editor Phil Scheffler and past and present 60 Minutes correspondents Mike Wallace, Harry Reasoner (posthumously), Ed Bradley, Morley Safer, Dan Rather, Andy Rooney, Lesley Stahl, Steve Kroft, Bob Simon, Christiane Amanpour, Diane Sawyer and Meredith Vieira.

"It was our honor to present so many notable broadcasters with the coveted Emmy in tribute to their skill, hard work and commitment,” said Peter Price, President of the National Television Academy. “It also proved to be a worthy time to recognize the contributions of Don Hewitt and the 60 Minutes correspondents, past and present, in honor not only of their 35 years of commitment to hard-driving news journalism, but also in recognition of their impact on the television industry."

The finalists were chosen by blue ribbon panels composed of broadcast industry professionals. Entries were reviewed from the 2002 calendar year.
