THE NATIONAL TELEVISION ACADEMY ANNOUNCES THE NOMINEES FOR THE FIRST ANNUAL NEWS AND DOCUMENTARY EMMY AWARDS FOR BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL REPORTING

New York, October 29, 2003 – The National Television Academy today announced the nominees for the First Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards For Business and Financial Reporting.  The awards will be presented at a luncheon sponsored by the NTA and Paul Steiger, Managing Editor of the Wall Street Journal, on Thursday, December 4, 2003 at the Union Club in New York City. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer will give the keynote address.

The awards recognize outstanding achievement in business and financial reporting by programs broadcast from July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2003.  Nominees were announced in four categories: Outstanding Coverage of a Current Business News Story; Outstanding Investigative Reporting of a Business News Story; Outstanding Interpretation and/or Analysis of a Business News Story and Outstanding Documentary on a Business Topic.

“The inaugural group of nominees demonstrates the excellent work being done in the area of business and financial reporting,” said NTA president, Peter Price. “The National Television Academy is proud to give recognition to this excellent, but often under-appreciated, body of work.”

“Business reporting may not be as pictorially exciting as war coverage or natural disasters,” remarked Bill Small, Vice Chairman of News and Documentaries for the National Television Academy, “but the best of it, as reflected in these nominations, is equally if not more important to the average American.”

The numerical breakdown, by broadcast and cable entities, as compiled by the independent accountancy firm of Lutz and Carr, LLP, follows:

                CBS        9                      A&E      1

PBS          6                     ABC       1

CNBC      2                     Bloomberg             1

A complete list of nominations is available on the National Academy's web site at www.emmyonline.org.
