For almost a decade now, NATAS has provided two scholarships, each currently valued at $40,000,to two high school students planning on majoring in communications and planning careers in the field of television or a related field. Beginning with a pool of as many as 800 applicants, these students undergo a competitive three-tier evaluation process conducted by NATAS Trustees, chaired by Dr. Norman Felsenthal, Professor of Communications at Temple University in Philadelphia. Once awarded, each recipient must demonstrate satisfactory progress towards a degree and remain in a communications-oriented program. The Trustee Scholarship awards may be used for tuition, books, living expenses, and other related costs. The new John Cannon Memorial Scholarship, which is available only to the children and grandchildren of NATAS members, will also be awarded this year for the first time. Winners of both the Trustee and Cannon Scholarships will be notified before April 1st, and formal presentations will be made at the Spring Trustee Meeting in early June.
