About National Television Academy Scholarships

Each year the National Television Academy awards three $40,000 college scholarships to high school students planning to pursue careers in television or a related field. The Trustees Scholarship is open to any graduating high school senior planning to major in communications at a four-year university. The John Cannon Memorial Scholarship is restricted to the children and grandchildren of National Television Academy members. Two Trustees Scholarship scholarships and one John Cannon Memorial Scholarship are awarded annually.

The scholarships are distributed over a four-year period with $10,000 awarded prior to the first year of study, and three additional awards of $10,000 granted in subsequent years. To be eligible for continuing awards, each recipient must demonstrate satisfactory progress toward a degree and remain in a communications-oriented program. The scholarship awards may be used for tuition, books, living expenses and other related costs.

Application forms are available from the National Television Academy website or from the local office of any NTA chapter. While considerable emphasis is placed on the creative accomplishments of each applicant, College Board scores are also required. Those who have not already taken the SAT or ACT should do so by November 1 to assure that they will have scores to report when the application is due in early December. Candidates who pass an initial screening will be asked, at a later date, to supply verification of their College Board scores as well as high school transcripts and appropriate recommendations. Those selected as finalists will be required to submit a portfolio of their creative work.

High school seniors are encouraged to apply. Relatives of NTA officers and trustees and relatives of NTA employees may only apply for the John Cannon Memorial Scholarship.

The NTA scholarship program is chaired by Dr. Norman Felsenthal, Professor of Communications at Temple University in Philadelphia.
