NATAS ANNOUNCES BROADBAND NOMINEES FOR THE EMMY AWARD
FOR NEWS & DOCUMENTARY

Media Entities Noted for Print Coverage – Newspapers and Magazines
Dominate The Broadband Emmy Nominations

New York, N.Y. – July 10, 2007 – On July 9, 2007, a panel of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) issued an Order allowing the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) to proceed with presentation of all its previously announced awards for broadband. Following on this Order, NATAS today announced the nominees for the Emmy® Awards to be presented for original news and documentary programming created specifically for broadband. These Emmy Awards will be presented at a black tie gala at the 28th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards on Monday, September 24 at New York Sheraton Hotel. Nominees in 28 additional categories will be announced on July 17.

“The nominees in four categories – current news coverage, documentary/non-fiction, arts/lifestyle/culture, and regional news coverage – represent a broad cross-section of media entities involved in the creation of video for the Internet, cell phones, portable media players and other devices,” said Peter Price, President/CEO of NATAS. “In fact, we are seeing many media companies that built their reputations in print reporting, now excelling in news and documentary production for ‘small screen television.’ It is NATAS’ goal to play a leadership role in recognizing and encouraging this new generation of video producers.” Mr. Price noted that one of the nominees, “Song of Songs” a moving story of relationships, inspired by the producer’s grandparents’ 63rd wedding anniversary, entered the Broadband Emmy Awards competition via the MySpace promotion, which NATAS began earlier this year in order to reach out to user-generated video producers.

AAA’s order cleared the way for NATAS to recognize broadband at the 28th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards. On June 22, 2007, the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) filed a petition seeking an order that could have prevented NATAS from presenting any Broadband Emmy Awards until the arbitration panel had made a decision on how the Emmy Awards with respect to new media should be handled, which is expected in October. The AAA panel also denied ATAS's request that the National Academy of Media Arts & Sciences, a newly formed peer group of NATAS, be enjoined from organizing and recruiting new members until the arbitration is decided. In May, NATAS announced the formation of NAMAS, open to current and new members of NATAS’ 19 chapters and chaired by Bob Wright, Past Chairman of the Board of NBC Universal and Vice Chairman of the Board, Executive Officer and a member of the Corporate Executive Officer of General Electric Company.

“This year’s nominees for the Broadband Emmy Awards covered a broad range of topics, including the news of the year – the crisis in Darfur, the AIDS pandemic in Africa, the pain of the U.S military at war -- as well as stories that might not have made it to broadcast television’s evening news, but are equally compelling and deserve to be told,” said Av Westin, veteran ABC News executive and Co-Chairman of the National Television Academy’s Awards Committee for News & Documentary. Mr. Westin, who was instrumental in developing the competition guidelines for this new Emmy Award, also noted that the Emmy Awards’ recognition of Broadband news & documentary programming expanded from one award in 2006 (awarded to washingtonpost.com for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina) to four this year, and entries far exceeded expectations, both in quantity and quality.
The numerical breakdown, by media entities, as compiled by the independent accountancy firm of Lutz and Carr, LLP, follows:

The new Emmy Award was proposed by the Academy’s National Awards Committee at its October 2005 meeting, and was approved by its Board of Trustees, in response to the burgeoning number of individuals and companies announcing plans to produce original programming for these media. Entries for this award must be original material made-for-broadband or made-for-mobile. These platforms include video blogs; website programs including journalistic reporting, event coverage or event analysis; mobisodes (short episodes created for mobile devices); video-on-demand and other video delivered over an IP network or platform such as wireless, broadband or VOD. Entries cannot be material originally produced for television viewing and then repurposed for the new media.
The new Emmy Award also will be presented later this year at the 2007 Business & Financial Reporting and Community & Public Service Emmy Awards ceremonies.
